Madonna del Castello di Ambivere

In the municipality of Ambivere, at the bottom of a majestic staircase of 500 steps, arises the shrine dedicated to the Nativity of Mary, better known as Santuario della Madonna del Castello. Previously a fortification was located in this place. Local tradition tells that in past times Virgin Mary saved some French soldiers barricaded inside the castle, which were starving, pouring some fresh water from a spring.

The present church was built at the end of the 17th century, on the basis of a former building, as a damaged fresco inside the external apsis testifies. This painting represents Virgin Mary sitting in a throne with her child Jesus, and it was painted around the 15th and 16th century. The interior has a nave decorated with paintings and a refined Serassi pipe organ from the 18th century.
