Mount Canto is the first mountain that you come to when coming up from the Po Valley, on the east bank of the Adda river in the area of the Isola Bergamasca.
It’s an isolated mountain, an “orfano”, because of it’s detachment from “mother” chain, the Bergamasque Prealps, from which it separated from the Valle San Martino with the towns of Pontida and Cisano.
Mainly composed of sandstones and conglomerates, it is covered mostly with forests with chestnut trees, especially on the northern side, while on the south there are some cultivated fields and vineyards.
Geographically it belongs to almost 7 municipalities: (from the south and clockwise) Carvico, Sotto il Monte Giovanni XXIII, Mapello, Ambivere, Pontida, Cisano Bergamasco, Villa d’Adda.
Mount Canto is ideal for walks and easy mountain bike rides, with many marked trails, very popular among the locals, starting from the towns that surround it.
CAI trail 891, which develops on the ridge-line along the east-west ridge of the mountain, is the backbone of the paths along the mountain.
