Castello di Marne

Castello di Marne

The building has always been considered to be an impregnable fortress, thanks to its excellent strategic location.

It is perched, in fact, on a rocky outcrop over a creek which flows into Dordo near Brembo.

Externally it has maintained its typical medieval structure, but has been altered several times, in particular with a neo-medieval remodelling in the early twentieth century, which resulted in the crenellated tower and arched windows.

The interior harks back to Renaissance residences with an L shape construction including the garden and the well wall.

castello solza Struttura interna

Castello di Solza

The first record of a defensive structure in Solza refers to a battle, which took place in 1404, in which the fortress is the backdrop of a struggle between the Guelfi and Ghibellini.

The castle, however, is best known for being the birthplace of Bartolomeo Colleoni. According to history, he left Castello Solza at around 14 to 15 years old. Nothing foretold that he was destined to become one of the most notorious leaders of the fifteenth century.

The manor is four-sided, set on a slight slope overlooking the river bed of the Adda, surrounded by a small village, but, nevertheless, independent and separate.
The complex consists of the remains of a tower and a wall which encloses the courtyard, in which there are some buildings.

It is one of the many historical sites that dot the island. Right along the river Adda lies evidence of two great powers pitted against each other long ago, the Duchy of Milan and the Republic of Venice.

Castello Moretti

Castello Moretti

Construction was often the subject of disputes between Brembatesi and Treviglio because of the water taken, in Brembate, from the from the river Brembo river that went to irragiate the fields of Treviglio.

It’s been suggested the the first part of this construction could have taken place as early as the year 950. Around 1360, however, the castle is owned Brembate Suardi, known family of Bergamo.

The fifteenth century set the scene for fratricidal struggles between Guelfi and Ghibellines. In the seventeenth century the Tasca Family became the owners of the building and in the early decades of the 1800s it passed to the Moretti family.

Today the castle houses the facilities of the Suardi era. There are clearly visible in the old masonry made with round pebbles from the river and the porch with wooden beamed ceiling. The tower is the only evidence of the ancient castle.

Cimitero crespi d'adda

Cementery

In 1896, through the Academy of Brera, the Crespi announce a competition for the design of the cemetery.

The winner is Gaetano Moretti and the work ends in 1908.

The tomb of the Crespi family, reminiscent of some exotic architectures – particularly Egyptian and Assyrian – inserted in the main monument, stands up on the rest of the scenic space of the cemetery.

At the level of the ground, in perfect order, there is a group of crosses made in Adda wood, destined to the inhabitants of the village. The simple burial was offered by the company.

Marne S. Bartolomeo

Chiesa S. Bartolomeo a Marne

Nearby is the church of San Bartolomeo.
It is a Romanesque church building dating back to the first half of the twelfth century.

The original building has remained in almost perfect condition, and the semicircular apse is particularly interesting for the external and interior decoration that characterizes it.
The columns of the apse are joined together at the top, by a series of light arches that rest on finely carved tops and simple arch stones, some of which are decorated with anthropomorphic carvings.

The structure has a single nave apse culminating in a pointed arch that divides it. Inside you will see frescoes from both the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

Grignano S.Ferrmo e Rustico

Chiesa S. Fermo e Rustico a Grignano

In the municipality of Brembate, at the centre of a small rural village about two kilometers from the hamlet of Grignano, stands the ancient Roman church of S. Fermo in Bedesco,  which has been a subsidiary of the parish of Marne since the sixteenth century.

Its existence was recorded in an Act of 1158. The building is oriented east to west. The façade has had several changes over the centuries.

Particularly interesting is the bas-relief depicting a zoomorphic bezel, moved here from the facade of a private building in Grignano.
Inside, the presbytery is covered by a dome. The pillars that support it and the octagonal frame have decorated tops.

The apse preserves visible traces of fresco decoration dating from the twelfth century with depictions of the quattro Evangelisti (the four evangelists) in medallions and Cristo Pantocràtore in mandorla (Christ) .

The abbey is usually closed. A previous check of the special openings or visits is recommended.

Chiesa San Vittore Brembate

Chiesa S. Vittore a Brembate

Over the river Brembo the ancient bridge of San Vittore has endured for centuries, originally built with a method typical of either the late antiquity or medieval period.
The church of San Vittore dates back to the same period, putting the building of the Church to early medieval times, if not before.

The church includes an underground section consisting of a cave with an outside exit, the XV-XVI century, creating a singular space with a rectangular plan, supplemented by a small bell tower.

Inside the cave is an ancient fresco depicting the Crucifixion and in the upper church there are some beautiful frescoes in excellent condition dating from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

chiesa crespi d'adda

Church

Among the houses of the villageit stands the Renaissance church, copy of Santa Maria della Piazza of Busto Arsizio, birthplace of Crespi.

Cristoforo Crespi, a fervent Catholic, wants to offer to the villagers, who come to live there from different places, a common history, a collective identity.

He believes that he can build it even through religious rites, the enunciation of masses and of the liturgical calendar.

Built between 1891 and 1893, under the direction of engineer Pietro Brunati, the church has walls painted with refinement and contains paintings of great value.

The dome is noteworthy, from which leak shining stars on a night sky.

Chiesa Crespi d'Adda

Chiesa di SMaria in Brusicco

Church of S. Mary in Brusicco

It is the church where the spiritual journey of Angelo Roncalli starts from. It is here where the future pope was baptized, on 25 November 1881. It now contains a symbol of the end of his earthly life: the stone that covered his tomb in the Vatican grottoes.
But the history of the building dates before the nineteenth century.
It dates back to the fifteenth century, and boasts among its decorations a “St. Anthony of Padua” attributed to Carlo Ceresa.
